Almost all types of prostate cancers are called adenocarcinomas. Other types of cancer that can start in the prostate can include:

  • Small cell carcinoma
  • Neuroendocrine tumors
  • Transitional cell carcinomas
  • Sarcomas

Although this other type of cancer is rare. Most often, if you are told that you have prostate cancer, it is almost certain that what you have is adenocarcinoma.

Symptoms

Mostly, in its early stages, prostate cancer does not usually manifest symptoms. And when symptoms do occur, they can project as those of an enlarged prostate. Symptoms of prostate cancer can include:

  • Frequent urinating
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Pain in the lower back, hips, or thighs
  • Loss of appetite
  • Loss of weight
  • Trouble urinating
  • Weak urine flow
  • Blood in the urine
  • Bone pain

Causes

There are no known causes of prostate cancer. But it can develop when a specific change in the glandular cells occurs. When prostate gland cells appear abnormal, doctors may refer to these changes as prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia. At first, these changes can be very slow, and the cell is not cancerous. However, as time passes, they can develop and become cancerous.

Here are some of the risk factors attributed to developing prostate cancer:

  • Age – most men develop cancer after the age of 50
  • Family history – if you have a family member or close relative who had prostate cancer
  • Genetic factors – inherited features and mutations of genes can also be a factor in developing prostate cancer
  • Diet – high-fat diets may increase the risk of prostate cancer

Some of these other factors can also influence the development of prostate cancer:

  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Exposure to chemicals
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Inflammation or infection of the prostate
  • Vasectomy

Treatment

Some cancers grow slowly so treatment may not be needed. But others grow fast and are life-threatening that treatments are necessary. But deciding on what treatment to get can be complex. Talk to your urologist about your options. Also, before deciding, you should consider how immediate and long-term the side effects would be, and what you are willing to tolerate.

If you are experiencing symptoms, you should see a doctor immediately. Delaying treatments will only allow the condition to get worse.
