What is Family medicine?
Family medicine is a medical specialty that provides primary and comprehensive health care for all family members across all ages, genders, diseases, and parts of the body. The specialist focuses on providing holistic healthcare by emphasizing preventive measures, diagnosis, and treatment of health concerns. It offers a nurturing environment for kids to ensure growth and track development. Whether vaccinations, common colds, or more specific pediatric issues, a family physician provides more personalized care for a healthy start to life.
According to the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA), the aim of family medicine is to promote personal, comprehensive and continuity care for the individual based on family and community. These values are issued for practice in their primary care ethics.
Family doctors offer continuity of care from routine check-ups to managing chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension to addressing all health needs in one place. They also offer immediate assistance for sudden illnesses or minor injuries, which helps you prevent unnecessary emergency room visits.
That’s why having good contact with family medicine is immensely helpful for good health care for the family.
Who’s a family medicine physician?
Family physicians are doctors who complete an undergraduate degree, medical school, and 3 years of specialized medical residency training in family medicine. Their residency training includes rotations in internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics-gynecology, psychiatry, surgery, emergency medicine, and geriatrics, with addition of electives in a wide range of other disciplines.
During residency training, the specialty focuses on treating the whole person by acknowledging the effect of all outside influences through all stages of life. Family physicians can see anyone with any problem, but they are experts in common problems. Many family physicians even deliver babies in addition to taking care of patients of all ages.
For a family physician to get board certification, they need to complete residency in family medicine, possess a full and unrestricted medical license by taking a written examination.
The American Board of Family Medicine, want their doctors to show additional participation in continuous learning and self-assessment to enhance their clinical knowledge, expertise, and skills. The board has created a program called the Maintenance of Certification Program for Family Physicians (MC-FP) to make sure family physicians continuously demonstrate their proficiency in the major 4 areas of clinical practice – professionalism, self-assessment/lifelong learning, cognitive expertise, and performance in practice. To become eligible for this exam, you need to complete 300 hours of continuing medical education within 6 years.
Family physicians can pursue other fellowships in several other fields as well such as adolescent medicine, geriatric medicine, sports medicine, sleep medicine, hospital medicine, and hospice and palliative medicine. That’s why the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Osteopathic Board of Family Medicine both offer Certificates of Added Qualifications (CAQs) in different topics.
