Seizures and Seizure Disorders

Do you know the difference between epilepsy and seizures? While they’re used interchangeably, they are not the same thing. Seizures occur once in a month or year while epilepsy causes seizures more than once on the same day. Epilepsy seizures are more dangerous and require medical attention. Both conditions are not curable but treatable. So, that’s why you must know the difference between them to prevent them. Log on to www.doralhw.org for a consultation.

Signs and symptoms of epilepsy depend on the type of seizure you are experiencing. There are 3 types of seizures and here are their symptoms:

  1. Generalized seizures can cause loss of consciousness.
  • Motor: If you experience Grand mal seizures (also called tonic-clonic with muscle jerks or spasms), they cause symptoms like the stiffness of muscles, relaxed muscles (atonic), repetitive shaking or jerking of the body, or muscles cause sporadic short jerking of the body and limbs.
  • Non-motor: Its symptoms include staring at empty space, sometimes even without an eye blinking.
  1. Partial or focal seizures cause either no loss of consciousness or confusion for a few minutes.
  • Aware: twitching and having a sensation of change.
  • Impaired awareness: you may not lose consciousness but may experience confusion for a few minutes.
  1. Unknown onset seizure
  • Unclassified: you may experience some similar features of generalized or focal seizures.
  • Motor: It involves musculature which means the system of muscles in a body, including every part or organ.
  • Non-motor: It also involves your awareness.

Besides these, there are some other symptoms of seizure disorder including:

  • Eye blinking
  • Sudden loss of muscle tone.
  • Convulsions
  • The person starts to cry for no reason.
  • Biting the tongue
  • The person falls suddenly to the ground
  • The lips may slightly jerk and move
  • The person is not able to respond to your questions.
  • Eye rolling
  • The person has a bowel movement.
  • Thought disturbances

Having any of these symptoms and your seizure lasts more than 5 minutes or having more than 1 within 5 minutes is an emergency that requires immediate medical care.
