Cryosurgery

A treatment using extreme cold to destroy abnormal cervical cells.

Cryosurgery

What is Cryosurgery?

Cryosurgery is a treatment that uses extremely cold temperatures (usually liquid nitrogen) to freeze and destroy abnormal or precancerous tissue on the cervix. It is a quick outpatient procedure performed without the need for incisions or anesthesia.

What to expect after Cryosurgery?

  • Watery discharge for 2–4 weeks
  • Mild cramping or aching for 1–2 days
  • Spotting or light bleeding for up to two weeks
  • Avoid tampons, intercourse, and douching for 4 weeks
  • Over‑the‑counter NSAIDs for discomfort
  • Follow‑up Pap and HPV testing at 6 months

Why is it performed?

  • To treat low‑grade cervical dysplasia (CIN I–II)
  • To destroy small precancerous lesions
  • As a less invasive option than excisional procedures
  • To reduce the risk of progression to cervical cancer

Risks and Considerations

  • Prolonged discharge
  • Infection risk at treatment site
  • Rare cervical stenosis (narrowing)
  • Possible need for retreatment

Early detection is important for managing the condition and preventing further complications.
