Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about conditions, treatments, appointments, and what to expect from your care.

When should I see a podiatrist?
See a podiatrist for persistent foot or ankle pain, heel pain, ingrown toenails, bunions, skin or nail problems, injuries, deformities, or changes in walking. People with diabetes may also benefit from preventive foot care even before symptoms become severe.
Yes. Preventive diabetic foot care can include skin and nail evaluation, circulation and sensation checks, education about daily foot care, treatment of calluses or nail problems, and monitoring for wounds or infection.
Yes. Podiatrists commonly evaluate and treat heel pain, plantar fasciitis, ingrown toenails, fungal nail problems, and other nail or foot conditions. Treatment may include medication, footwear changes, procedures, or other therapies based on the cause.
Custom orthotics and other alignment treatments may be recommended for certain foot mechanics, deformities, or pain conditions. A podiatric evaluation helps determine whether custom devices, supportive footwear, exercises, bracing, or another treatment is appropriate.
A foot wound needs prompt attention if it is red, warm, swollen, draining, foul-smelling, increasingly painful, or accompanied by fever. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or loss of sensation should seek care quickly for any new ulcer, blister, or wound.
