Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about conditions, treatments, appointments, and what to expect from your care.

What is the difference between a routine vision exam and a medical eye exam?
A routine vision exam focuses mainly on visual acuity and whether you need glasses or contact lenses. A medical eye exam evaluates eye health and can diagnose or monitor conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic eye disease, infections, or retinal problems.
Yes. Doral Health’s ophthalmology services include comprehensive medical eye care, and diabetic eye examinations are an important part of monitoring for diabetes-related retinal disease.
Glaucoma often has no early symptoms, while cataracts may cause blurry vision, glare, faded colors, or difficulty seeing at night. Other warning signs that need evaluation include new flashes or floaters, distorted vision, eye pain, redness, or sudden changes in vision.
Your eyes may be dilated if the ophthalmologist needs a wider view of the retina, optic nerve, or other internal structures. Dilation can temporarily cause light sensitivity and blurred near vision, so ask the office whether you may want someone else to drive.
Seek urgent medical attention for sudden vision loss, a curtain or shadow over your vision, new flashes with many floaters, severe eye pain, eye injury, chemical exposure, or sudden double vision. These symptoms can represent time-sensitive eye emergencies.
