What It Is — And Isn't

Palliative Care Adds to Treatment. It Doesn't Replace It.

Paediatric palliative care is specialised medical care layered on top of the treatments your child is already receiving. Under the New York Children’s 1915(c) HCBS Waiver and federal paediatric concurrent-care rules, families do not have to choose. Doral’s team works alongside your child’s oncologist, neurologist, cardiologist, or pulmonologist to relieve symptoms, support decision-making, and make home life as gentle as possible.

It is not hospice. Hospice is a specific benefit for adults with a six-month prognosis. Paediatric palliative care has no such gate, a child can receive it for months or for years.

FAQ

Questions Families Ask Most

Palliative care vs. hospice — what's the difference?

Palliative care is layered on top of treatment, has no prognosis requirement, and can continue for years. Paediatric hospice is comfort-only care for the final months, and even then, children do not need to stop curative treatment under federal concurrent-care rules.

No. Under the NY Children’s HCBS Waiver and federal rules, your child can receive palliative care alongside chemotherapy, transplant, seizure management, any curative treatment, without interruption.

Most families pay nothing. Coverage comes from the NY Children’s 1915(c) Waiver, Medicaid (EPSDT), most commercial insurance, and philanthropic funds for any remaining gaps.

First visit within 24–72 hours of referral. After enrolment, 24/7 phone access and same-day visits for symptom emergencies.
