Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about conditions, treatments, appointments, and what to expect from your care.

What symptoms indicate that I should see a cardiologist?
Symptoms that may warrant a cardiology evaluation include chest discomfort, shortness of breath, unexplained fatigue, palpitations, dizziness or fainting, leg swelling, or reduced exercise tolerance. You may also be referred because of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, an abnormal heart test, or a family history of heart disease.
Cardiac testing may include an electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG), echocardiogram, ambulatory heart monitoring, stress testing, blood-pressure monitoring, vascular studies, or other diagnostic tests depending on your symptoms and medical history. Your cardiologist will recommend the tests that are appropriate for you.

Yes. Cardiologists commonly help diagnose and manage high blood pressure, cholesterol disorders, abnormal heart rhythms, palpitations, coronary artery disease, heart failure, and other cardiovascular conditions.

Your first cardiology visit usually includes a review of your symptoms, medical and family history, medications, blood pressure, and prior test results. The cardiologist may perform an examination and recommend an EKG, imaging, laboratory work, monitoring, or additional testing.

Call 911 for chest pressure or pain that is severe, new, worsening, or associated with shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, fainting, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw. Sudden severe shortness of breath or collapse also requires emergency care.
