What is Dilation and Curettage (D&C)?

D&C involves gently dilating the cervix and removing tissue from the uterine lining using suction or a curette. It is performed under general or regional anesthesia in an operating suite.

What to expect after a D&C?

Cramping and mild pain for 1–2 days
Light bleeding or spotting for up to two weeks
Possible passage of old clots
Avoid tampons and intercourse for 2 weeks
Rest for 24–48 hours before resuming normal activities
Pain managed with prescribed analgesics

Why is it performed?

To evaluate abnormal uterine bleeding or heavy periods
To remove retained tissue after miscarriage or delivery
To obtain endometrial samples for cancer or hormonal assessment
To treat small polyps or fibroids
