What is Prostatectomy

The removal of your prostate may be necessary if you have prostate cancer, have severe urinary problems, or have an enlarged prostate. This kind of surgery is called a prostatectomy.

For more information about this procedure, you can visit our Prostatectomy Care Clinic at Doral Health and Wellness – Urology Center.

Prostatectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove all or parts of your prostate gland. Your prostate is a walnut-sized gland found below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It is responsible for making fluid that contains the sperm, this fluid will protect the sperm when they travel toward the woman’s egg during intercourse.

There are two main types of prostatectomy:

Radical Prostatectomy

Radical prostatectomy is the procedure used in removing the entire prostate gland. This is one of your options if you have cancer of the prostate that has not yet spread. There are also four main techniques of radical prostatectomy, which includes:

  • Retropubic – cutting a section just below your belly button up to your pubic bone
  • Laparoscopic – your doctor will make several small cuts in your abdomen to insert the tools, which allows your doctor to see the inside of your belly during the procedure
  • Robotic surgery – similar to laparoscopic, small cuts will be made in your belly for the tools to be inserted. But your doctor will use a robotic arm while sitting at a control console to move the instruments and camera inside your belly.
  • Perineal – this procedure needs a cut in the skin between your anus and at the base of your scrotum. This procedure takes less time and causes less loss of blood.

Open Simple Prostatectomy

Open simple prostatectomy is a surgical procedure where only the problematic part of the prostate is removed and not the entire prostate gland. This procedure is recommended if you are suffering from an enlarged prostate.

Like any other surgery, there are potential risks that come with the procedure., and they may include:

  • Loss of bladder control
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Becoming sterile
  • Injury to the rectum/anus
  • Bleeding
  • Change in penis length
  • Tightening of the urinary opening due to scar tissues

Make sure that you discuss with your doctor all the pros and cons of the surgery. It is also important that you tell your doctor about any medications that you are taking prior to having the prostatectomy.
