What is a Burn Infection?

Are you feeling persistent discomfort or pain in your stomach area? Abdominal pain is a common symptom that can vary in intensity and should be evaluated by a Primary Care provider when it is ongoing or severe.
Is your burn getting more painful instead of better? It may be infected. A burn infection happens when bacteria enter skin damaged by heat, chemicals, electricity, or sun exposure. Burns destroy the skin’s protective barrier, making burn wounds — especially open burn blisters — highly vulnerable to infection. An infected burn wound heals more slowly, scars more severely, and can spread to deeper tissue or the bloodstream if left untreated.

Common Symptoms

  • Increasing pain, redness, or swelling after the first days
  • Pus or cloudy fluid draining from the burn wound
  • Foul odor from the wound or dressing
  • Fever, chills, or feeling generally unwell
  • Wound not progressing through normal burn healing stages

When to see Dermatologist

  • Redness spreading beyond the edge of the burn
  • A burn blister that has burst, oozes, or looks infected
  • A burn that hasn’t started healing within two weeks
  • Second degree burns or worse, or burns on face, hands, feet, or joints
  • You have diabetes or a weakened immune system

Early detection is important for managing the condition and preventing further complications.

  • Popped or ruptured burn blisters

Diagnosis and Tests

  • Physical exam of the burn wound and surrounding skin
  • Assessment of burn degree and healing stage
  • Wound culture to identify the bacteria involved
  • Blood tests if a spreading infection is suspected
  • Review of injury history and home care routine

Treatment Options

  • Professional wound cleaning and removal of dead tissue (debridement)
