Different Types of Kidney Cancer
Kidney cancer is a type of cancer that starts in your kidneys, it is the abnormal growth of cells in the tissues of your kidney. These calls will eventually form a mass. When these tumors become cancerous or malignant, they can spread to your other tissues and vital organs.
If you notice signs and symptoms of kidney cancer, you can consult Doral Health and Wellness Urology Center and consult the best urologists in East New York.
There are different types of kidney cancer, and they include the following:
- Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) – this is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults, making up about 85% of all kidney cancers. This type of kidney cancer usually develops in the lining of the kidney’s small tubes called tubules, which account for the kidney’s filtration system. These cancerous cells will eventually form a mass and can cause an obstruction. This can may form in one or both of your kidneys.
- Urothelial carcinoma – this type of cancer is also called transitional cell carcinoma. It makes up about 5% to 10% of all kidney cancers diagnosed among adults. This type of cancer starts in the area of your kidney where urine is collected before it moves to your bladder. This type of cancer is treated similarly to bladder cancer.
- Sarcoma – sarcoma of the kidney is rare, and it is usually treated by having surgery to remove the mass. However, sarcoma is often known to come back after surgery so chemotherapy and more surgery may be needed after the first surgery.
- Lymphoma – lymphoma can enlarge both of your kidneys and the lymph nodes in other parts of your body including in your chest, neck, and abdominal cavity. Your medical provider will then perform a biopsy if lymphoma is a possibility and will recommend chemotherapy instead of surgery.
- Wilms tumor – this type is very common in children and is treated very differently from kidney cancer in adults. This type of kidney cancer makes up only 1% of kidney cancers. This type of tumor responds more positively to radiation therapy and chemotherapy than other types of kidney cancer treatments.
Kidney cancer is more likely to develop in men than in women and is most common in people who are between 65 years old to 74 years old. Kidney cancer is also less common in children, however, about 500 children are diagnosed with Wilms tumor every year in the United States alone.
Kidney cancer can be treated if caught during its early stage and treatment starts right away. Your prognosis will depend on the type and stage of your cancer. While your chance of recovery will depend on your overall state of health.
