Dehydration: And its Signs and Symptoms
Dehydration happens when there is an insufficient amount of water in your body, or when your body does not have as much water as it needs. Without enough water, your body cannot function properly.
For more information about the signs, symptoms, treatment, and prevention of dehydration, you can consult Doral Health and Wellness’ family doctor. Contact us at Doral Health and Wellness.
Causes
Losing water from your body is normal, and this happens when you are sweating, peeing, pooing, and even through tears and spitting. Usually, the water you lose is replaced when you are drinking fluids and eating foods that have water content. If you lose too much water from your body and this is not replaced accordingly, you can get dehydration. You lose more water quickly though when you have:
- A fever
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Excessive sweating
- Taking medicines that are diuretics, which make you pee more often
Symptoms
Losing as little as 1.5% of your body’s fluid can cause symptoms. These symptoms can be as simple as a light headache, or they can also be life-threatening such as heatstroke. Symptoms depend on when you have mild or moderate dehydration or when you have severe dehydration. Signs of moderate and mild dehydration include:
- Thirst
- Dark yellow pee
- Headache
- Dry mouth
- Less pee
- Muscle cramps
Signs of severe dehydration include:
- Feeling dizzy
- Sunken eyes
- Dry skin
- Not able to pee or a very dark yellow pee
- Rapid breathing
- Fast/rapid heartbeat
- Exhaustion or lack of energy
- Confusion and irritability
- Fainting
Severe dehydration is considered to be a medical emergency and should be treated immediately.
Preventing dehydration means you need to have enough water in your body. But do you how much water your body needs? That depends on your age, weight, level of activity and the climate of your environment, and some other factors. some people with other medical conditions may need to be more cautious about the amount of their water intake, such as people with diabetes, cystic fibrosis, and heart diseases.
Always keep track of your water intake. Although the standard advice is to consume eight glasses of water every day. It is advisable that you drink water throughout the day, especially during meals. Also, try to avoid soda, alcoholic and caffeinated drinks. You can also check the color of your urine to make sure that you are not dehydrated.
If you are an active person or play sports and regularly exercise, you should consume more water at least one or two hours before your activity. Talk to your medical provider about the right amount of water for you.
Always make it a habit to drink water regularly. Keep your water bottle filled and carry it with you wherever you go. Dehydration can contribute to life-threatening illnesses including kidney diseases and heatstroke.
