What is Tryptase Level Testing?
Tryptase level testing is a blood test that measures tryptase, a substance released by mast cells. It may be ordered after a severe allergic reaction or when there is concern for mast cell activation or related disorders.
This procedure helps to:
- Support evaluation after anaphylaxis
- Assess mast cell activation
- Provide information in suspected mast cell disorders
- Help interpret severe allergic reactions
- Guide further allergy or immunology workup
What to expect after Tryptase Level Testing?
This test requires a blood sample. Timing can matter, especially when the test is ordered after a severe allergic event, because levels may be most helpful when drawn within a certain time window and sometimes compared with a baseline level.
- A blood sample is collected
- Timing of the test may be important
- Normal activities usually resume after the draw
- Your provider may compare acute and baseline results
- Additional follow-up testing may be recommended
