Techniques

Here are some exercises that are amazingly effective to manage vertigo symptoms which include:

  1. Epley maneuver:

This is the most common way to manage vertigo and it’s also known as the Canalith repositioning maneuver. A 2020 Cochrane review found that the Epley maneuver can be significantly better at relieving symptoms of BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) than a control or sham maneuver.

You can perform the Epley maneuver at home by following these simple steps:

  • Sit on the edge of the bed or flat surface with a pillow behind you and turn your head 45 degrees to the left with your legs outstretched.
  • Lie down quickly and face head up on the bed at a 45-degree angle and hold this position for 30 seconds.
  • Now, turn the head halfway around 90 degrees to the right without raising your neck and hold it for 30 seconds.
  • Turn the head along with the entire body to the right side and look downward for 30 seconds.
  • Slowly sit up but stay sitting for at least a few minutes.

You can perform the Epley maneuver according to which ear is affected by vertigo shifting your head to the opposite side and all other steps stay the same as mentioned above. You should repeat this exercise 3 times in a row and may feel dizzy at each movement.

  1. Zuma maneuver:

This is a recently developed exercise to manage vertigo symptoms. Its steps include:

  • First, sit on the bed or the floor.
  • Quickly lie down on the affected side and hold that position for 3 minutes.
  • Rotate your head 90 degrees towards the ceiling and hold that position for 3 minutes.
  • Move your body towards the ceiling, rotate your head to 90 degrees, look over the shoulder of the affected side, and hold this position for 3 minutes.
  • Rotate your head back up to 90 degrees straight to the ceiling and slowly rise from your sitting position.

Perform it several times until you start feeling better.

  1. Semont-Toupet maneuver:

This exercise is similar to the Epley maneuver, but it requires less neck flexibility which makes this exercise a viable alternative to the Epley maneuver with the same effectiveness against vertigo. It steps are as follows:

  • Sit upright on a flat surface with a pillow behind you and outstretch your legs.
  • Lie down on the floor, turn to your right, look to your left side, and look upward.
  • Quickly sit up and turn to your left side while facing to the left. Now look downward to the ground.
  • Now slowly return to the original position, look forward, and sit up.
  • Gufoni maneuver:

This maneuver is very quick to perform and effective to counter the effects of vertigo. If your vertigo is more intense then turn your head towards the unaffected ear and do these simple steps:

  • Sit on the floor.
  • Rapidly lie down towards the affected side and hold that position for 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Turn your head quickly to 45 degrees towards the ceiling and hold that position for 2 minutes
  • Now sit back again.

If your vertigo gets more intense when your head is turned toward the affected ear, then simply turn toward the unaffected side, and perform all the steps the same as above.

  1. 6. Brandt-Daroff exercise:

This exercise is recommended for people with vertigo to do at home because it is simple and can be done unsupervised. However, it requires a safe space to perform because it may make you dizzy for a while. Its steps include:

  • Sit on the side of the bed with your legs dangling as if they are on a chair.
  • Turn your head as far as possible to the left side and lay your head and torso down to the right side. Your legs should not move and stay in this position for at least 30 seconds.
  • Sit up again and turn your head to the center position.
  • Repeat this exercise on the opposite side by turning your head to the right side and lying down on your left side.

Perform a set of 5 repetitions and repeat it 3 times a day, and twice a week.
