What is a Perineoplasty Procedure?
Perineoplasty is a surgical procedure done to tighten the area between your vagina and the anus. The purpose of this procedure is to strengthen and tighten the perineum which became loose and overstretched due to childbirth, weight loss, and other factors.
To know more about this procedure, you can consult a GYN in Brownsville and visit Doral Health and Wellness – Women’s Health Center.
Aside from restoring function and improving the appearance of the perineal area, it also improves your sexual satisfaction by narrowing the vaginal opening after giving birth.
During vaginal childbirth, you may experience tearing of the perineal tissue. Although these tears can heal naturally, large tears in the perineal area may need surgical treatment. In other instances, the scar tissues in your vagina can leave you with a feeling of looseness and you may also experience a feeling of discomfort.
Before undergoing the surgery, your gynecologist will first conduct a clinical assessment to ensure that you are fit and healthy for perineoplasty. You will undergo pre-operative tests and your doctor may want to check your past medical history. If you have a chronic medical condition, you may be required to seek a special clearance first before having this certain procedure.
Also, you may need to fall into one of these categories first before you can be a candidate for perineoplasty:
- Have pelvic organ prolapse
- Have difficulty passing a bowel
- Have a recurrent vaginal infection
- Have painful scar tissue
- Is experiencing pain and discomfort during sexual intercourse
- When the perineum area is tender to touch
If you are a woman who falls under these categories, you are outright not suitable for perineoplasty:
- Pregnant women
- Have a precancerous or cancerous condition
- Have a vascular condition of the female genitalia
- Have an active vaginal infection
- Have a higher risk of severe bleeding during and after the procedure
Perineoplasty is an outpatient procedure and can only last for about 30-45 minutes. You may only need to be under minor sedation and local anesthesia and will likely be able to go home after an hour or two of observation after surgery.
You may also experience discomfort and uneasiness when urinating after the surgery. You may also experience minor bleeding. You will also be advised to limit yourself from doing strenuous activities and do light activities instead for four weeks after the surgery. And to abstain from sexual activity for six weeks following the procedure.
